Mozambique Ferry Disaster Claims Nearly 100 Lives

The death toll from a ferry accident off Mozambique’s northern coast has risen to nearly 100. The Maritime Transport Institute reported that the overloaded fishing boat, which capsized on Sunday, lacked proper licensing for passenger transport.

Manuel Loforte confirmed the toll increased from 91 to 96 after recovering additional bodies. Among the victims were children, with 26 individuals still missing. Over 130 people were onboard, and 11 were hospitalized.

Victims’ relatives, like Momade Raisse and Amade Juma, shared heartbreaking accounts of lost family members. Reports suggest some passengers sought refuge from a cholera outbreak, highlighting the panic caused by misinformation.

Authorities are grappling with a cholera epidemic, exacerbating transportation risks in the region. Many rely on boats for travel, despite frequent overcrowding.
