The South African Police Service (SAPS) announced on April 10th that six suspects involved in the murder of footballer and Olympian Luke Fleurs have been apprehended and are scheduled to face court proceedings.
Fleurs, a 24-year-old defender, was fatally shot while awaiting assistance at a petrol station in Johannesburg’s Honeydew suburb on April 3rd.
The breakthrough was disclosed in a police statement. A specialized team, appointed by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, successfully recovered Fleurs’ car and arrested the six individuals allegedly responsible for hijacking and killing the Kaizer Chiefs player.
The suspects were apprehended in Slovoville, Soweto, during the early hours of Wednesday. Police had previously recovered the stripped vehicle.
Authorities suspect the arrested individuals to be part of a larger car hijacking syndicate in Gauteng, with ongoing efforts to locate additional suspects.
Led by Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection Major General Mbuso Khumalo, the multi-agency team includes the SAPS Provincial Investigation Unit, SAPS National Crime Intelligence, SAPS Drone Unit, Honeydew Detectives, Honeydew Crime Intelligence, CAP Special Operations, and Fidelity Specialized Services.
The arrested suspects are anticipated to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 12, 2024.
