Football star Kylian Mbappé has urged French citizens to vote and cautioned against the rise of “extremes” amid the approaching parliamentary elections where the far right aims to gain power.
On the eve of France’s opening match in the European Championship, Mbappé, who captains the national team, emphasized the importance of young people recognizing the impact of their votes.
He did not mention any specific politicians or parties.
“I believe we are at a crucial point in our country’s history,” Mbappé stated. “Our generation has the power to make a difference. We see that the extremes are trying to take control, and we have the chance to shape our country’s future.”
Mbappé added that discussing politics would not affect France’s performance on the field.
President Emmanuel Macron has scheduled two rounds of national assembly elections for June 30 and July 7 in an effort to counter the gains made by his far-right opponents in the recent European parliamentary elections.
