Roberto Baggio and his family abducted from their home during the Italy-Spain match

Former footballer Roberto Baggio and his family were abducted from their home for 40 minutes on Thursday during the Euro-2024 Italy-Spain match, when several individuals broke into the residence, as reported by the Italian press.

According to Corriere della Sera, 57-year-old Roberto Baggio was injured by the barrel of a gun during the robbery of his home in Altavilla Vicentina, Vicenza, in the north of the country.

The robbery and kidnapping began at 10pm local time, while the 1993 Ballon d’Or winner was watching the European Championship match on television. A group of at least five armed people entered the villa.

Baggio fought off one of the assailants and was hit in the face with the barrel of a gun, suffering a deep wound. The former player and his family were then locked inside the house. During the robbery, the criminals took watches, jewellery and money, which has yet to be quantified, until Baggio managed to escape and call the authorities, who used CCTV footage.

The former Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan player was taken to hospital, where he underwent stitches.
