Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) became the first Eritrean cyclist to win a stage of the Tour de France by winning the sprint in Turin on the third stage. Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) took the overall lead.
Girmay, 24, won the 230.8 kilometres between Piacenza and Turin, beating Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny).
A crash in the last two kilometres split the peloton. Richard Carapaz, in the first group, took the yellow jersey, tied on time with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step).
Tuesday’s fourth stage goes from Pinerolo (Italy) to Valloire, with 139.6 kilometres and includes the ascent of the Galibier.
