Biles attempts to rewrite Olympic history

On Thursday, American Simone Biles will attempt to continue making history at the Paris-2024 Olympic Games by competing in the individual all-around event in artistic gymnastics, on the same day that athletics, considered to be the main discipline of the Games, begins its competitions.

With the United States’ victory in the team competition, Biles won her eighth Olympic medal – her fifth in gold – and is now seeking her sixth Olympic title. With this achievement, she can move into third place on the list of Olympic champions, behind the Czech Republic’s Vera Caslavska, with seven titles, and Russia’s Larisa Latynina, with nine.

At the age of 27, Biles is back to winning at the Olympic Games after her difficulties at Tokyo-2020, when she had to withdraw from certain events due to mental health problems. Despite the US team’s dominant performance in the team competition, the individual event promises to be more competitive.

Biles will face competition from Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who played a crucial role in Brazil’s historic team bronze medal, the country’s first in this category. Filipa Martins, who became the first Portuguese woman to reach the final, will also take part in the entire individual competition.
