Andy Murray’s illustrious career came to an end when he, 37, and his partner Dan Evans, 34, were beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Americans Taylor Fritz, 26, and Tommy Paul, 27, in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games at Roland Garros on Thursday.
Murray, regarded as one of Britain’s greatest athletes, is a two-time Wimbledon winner and world No. 1. Before the Games, he announced that he would retire at the end of the event.
After retiring from singles competition, Evans and Murray won two rounds of doubles, saving several match points on each occasion, raising hopes of a glorious end to their careers.
They saved another match point against the Americans on the Suzanne-Lenglen court on Thursday, but Fritz and Paul prevailed, denying Murray the chance to win a fourth Olympic medal.
Murray won singles gold in 2012 and 2016, and mixed doubles silver in 2012.
