Medal brings title-holder Djokovic’s golden career to an end

Novak Djokovic, 37, won the Olympic gold medal by beating 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, completing his collection of tennis’ greatest honors and consolidating his status as one of the greatest players of all time.

The Serb overcame a 16-year age difference at Roland Garros on Sunday, winning 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2) in what was perhaps his last chance for Olympic glory.

Although he had nothing to prove against a young rival with a bright future, Djokovic showed an intense desire to win. After his victory, he collapsed on the clay court, shaking with emotion, revealing just how much this feat meant to him.

Djokovic now holds 24 Grand Slam titles, four more than his former rival Roger Federer and two more than Rafael Nadal. He also holds a number of records in men’s tennis, including 40 Masters titles and a record 428 weeks as world number one.

Until then, his best Olympic performance had been a bronze medal in singles at the 2008 Beijing Games. Without winning a tournament this year, Djokovic showed his characteristic determination in Paris, refusing to accept defeat.
