As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential election approaches, the IOC has released the names of seven candidates vying for the position in March.
Among the contenders are two former Olympic athletes, including two-time gold medalist in running, Sebastian Coe. Coe, considered one of the top candidates for the role, has clashed with the IOC on several issues, notably his strong opposition to Russia over state-sponsored doping.
Coe may also face legal challenges regarding his eligibility to serve a full eight-year term, as the upper age limit for IOC members is 70, and he will be 68 on election day. However, the rules allow for a possible exemption, extending his term by an additional four years.
Another notable candidate is two-time gold medalist swimmer Kirsty Coventry, the only woman in the race. Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan is also among the hopefuls.
A finalized list of candidates is expected at the start of next year, before the 111 IOC members cast their votes. The winner’s mandate will cover the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2032 Games in Brisbane. The IOC will also focus on selecting the host city for the 2036 Games and addressing the impact of climate change on global sports events.
