South Africa: Continent’s largest aerospace and defence exhibition ends

The 12th edition of Africa’s largest aerospace and defense exhibition, which concluded on September 22 in South Africa, attracted aviation experts, companies, and enthusiasts. Despite cold weather, hundreds attended to view impressive displays, interact with aircraft, and explore the latest aviation technologies.

A popular attraction was Spot, the robotic dog from Boston Dynamics, presented by Cape Town-based Deep Tech Solutions. The company highlighted the robot’s potential for advanced remote inspections, especially in search and rescue operations, disaster management, and the mining sector, providing crucial aid in identifying risks and offering comfort to victims, explained representative Rethabile Letlala.

The five-day Africa Aerospace and Defence Trade and Exhibition also showcased next-generation weapons and brought together key local and international participants seeking opportunities in South Africa’s defense sector. Martin Venter of ECM Technologies praised AAD for uniting global communities, with exhibitors from countries like India, the US, and the UK.

This year’s air show saw a greater presence of Chinese hardware, though the usual strong US military presence was absent. The next edition will take place in 2026.
