Ethiopian athletes sweep to victory in Berlin marathon

Ethiopian athletes dominated the 2024 Berlin Marathon on Sunday, with Milkesa Mengesha winning the men’s race in a personal best time of 2 hours, 3 minutes. Haymanot Alew also delivered a strong performance, narrowly missing second place to Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigist Ketema claimed victory with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 42 seconds. Compatriots Mestawut Fikir and Bosena Mulatie completed the Ethiopian sweep, taking second and third places, respectively.

This year’s event marked the first time since 2014 without the participation of Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge or Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele. A record-breaking 58,000 runners from 161 nations participated.
