Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has reportedly shown interest in purchasing the prestigious English football club, Liverpool FC. This revelation comes from his father, Errol Musk, who spoke to Times Radio about the possibility of Elon acquiring the club, though he clarified that no deal is currently in place.
Liverpool’s Ownership and the Current Situation
Liverpool is privately owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has not signaled any intention to sell the club but has welcomed external investments in the past. In 2023, FSG sold a minority stake to U.S. investment firm Dynasty Equity. Despite rumors of a potential sale, FSG remains committed to Liverpool, as stated by president Mike Gordon, who emphasized their long-term dedication to the club’s growth and financial stability.
Elon Musk’s Interest: What Errol Musk Said
While Errol Musk confirmed his son’s interest in Liverpool, he also cautioned that this doesn’t guarantee a purchase. He commented, “Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.” He further mentioned that any discussion about the sale would likely involve a price increase.
FSG’s Stance on the Sale
When approached for comment, a spokesperson for FSG firmly denied the rumors, stating, “No truth to these rumours.” FSG has continuously reinforced its commitment to Liverpool, maintaining its position as one of Europe’s leading football clubs, and remains open to future investments that align with the club’s goals.
Liverpool’s Recent Success Under FSG
Under FSG’s ownership, Liverpool FC has risen to prominence, securing its first English league title in 30 years in 2020 and winning the UEFA Champions League the season prior. The club continues to compete at the highest level, leading both the Premier League and Champions League this season.
Musk Family Ties to Liverpool and British Politics
Errol Musk also revealed that the family has personal ties to Liverpool, mentioning their connections to local figures and even The Beatles. In recent months, Elon Musk has become more involved in British politics, especially after the Labour Party’s election in July 2024. He has used his platform, X (formerly Twitter), to advocate for a new election, sparking political debates.
