Mauritania conducted a training session in Cairo on Thursday, a day before their first AFCON qualifier against Egypt. The “Lions of Chinguetti”, coached by Amir Abdou, will play Egypt on Friday in Cairo and face them again in Nouakchott next Tuesday.
Mauritania’s performance in Group C has been mixed, with a 1-0 victory over Botswana in September, followed by a 2-0 loss to Cape Verde. Egypt, however, has been dominant, winning their first two matches, 3-0 against Cape Verde and 4-0 against Botswana.
Egypt also holds an unblemished record against Mauritania, winning all three previous encounters. Mahmoud Trezeguet, Egypt’s midfielder, expressed respect for Mauritania, stating that their generation always strives for victory to achieve the nation’s goals.
Despite Egypt being the clear favorites, head coach Hossam Hassan has faced criticism for his squad selection and inconsistent performances throughout the year. Hassan emphasized the importance of avoiding defeat, especially in away matches.
Egypt remains unbeaten in their last three games against Mauritania, adding to their status as strong contenders for both upcoming fixtures.
