During a session with G7 foreign ministers, Mauritania’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug participated in discussions covering topics such as Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East. These talks, initiated on Wednesday in the Italian island of Capri, also aimed to bolster the G7’s collaboration with the African Union (AU), an issue extensively deliberated between Rome and Washington.
While European Union leaders contemplate increasing sanctions against Iran due to recent events, the AU’s stance remains ambiguous regarding Israel’s potential responses and the legitimacy of Iran’s missile attack on Israel last week, which was a highly unusual move.
Experts highlight that the AU generally does not advocate for sanctions. The union consistently emphasizes the necessity to lift sanctions imposed on nations like Zimbabwe and Cuba by Western countries.
