Egyptian giants Al Ahly have secured their 12th CAF Champions League title by defeating Tunisia’s Esperance 1-0 in the final held in Cairo.
The first leg in Tunisia ended in a 0-0 draw, making the second leg decisive. Al Ahly’s victory was sealed just four minutes into the match when an Esperance player accidentally headed the ball into his own net from a corner taken by Hussein El Shahat.
Fans were ecstatic.
“I swear to God, our happiness cannot be described. We tried to enter the stadium but couldn’t. Still, my happiness is just as if I had entered. This is our 12th championship, which is double the number our rivals have. We are the champions of Africa, and no one can ever reach that number,” said Al Ahly fan Alaa Sayed.
Essam, another Al Ahly supporter, expressed hope for future success.
“Congratulations to Al Ahly and their fans, congratulations to Egypt, and hopefully we will see you again in the 13th championship.”
Saturday’s win also marks 20 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League matches without a loss for Al Ahly.
