Armorion Smith, student and athlete by day, legal guardian of his siblings by night

Armorion Smith, a 21-year-old Michigan State defensive back, became the legal guardian of four of his five younger siblings following his mother’s passing from breast cancer in August. Balancing school, football, and family, Smith dedicates around 12 hours a day to his athletic and academic commitments before returning home to care for his siblings.

Smith transferred closer to home in 2022 after his mother’s diagnosis, sharing responsibilities with his 19-year-old sister. “We work together to keep things afloat,” Smith said. Determined to provide a safe and happy environment, they live in a four-bedroom house with financial support from a GoFundMe campaign, federal student aid, and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals.

Smith’s teammates admire his resilience. “He’s one of the strongest guys I know,” said linebacker Jordan Hall. The community, including family friend Yolanda Wilson, also rallies behind them.

While Smith’s situation is unique, 19.5% of undergraduate students in the U.S. have a dependent.
