Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has stated that he will stay at Old Trafford as long as he is wanted, amid speculation about the future of the Portuguese international midfielder.
The 29-year-old Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent days, with the Red Devils missing out on the Champions League next season.
Manchester United may be forced to sell the Portuguese midfielder to raise the necessary funds for a major squad overhaul in the summer and to comply with the Premier League’s financial sustainability rules.
“I will be here as long as the club wants me and the club wants me to be part of the future,” said Bruno Fernandes, whose contract runs until 2026.
“If for any reason they don’t want me, then I’ll leave,” he stated bluntly.
Bruno Fernandes played his part as Manchester United kept their hopes of European qualification through the Premier League alive with a 3-2 victory over Newcastle this Wednesday.
Erik ten Hag’s men remain in eighth place on the table, but they can overtake Newcastle and reach seventh place if they achieve a better result than the Magpies on the final day of the Premier League.
Manchester United visits Brighton on Sunday, while Newcastle travels to Brentford.
“It has been a tough season. The table shows it and we are all aware of it,” added Bruno Fernandes.
“The fans have been fantastic for us and we had to do something. We have been trying, but the results don’t show it. We have been working hard and everyone has been giving their best, but it’s not enough and we have to do more,” admitted the Portuguese midfielder.
Even if Manchester United fails to finish in the top seven for the first time in the Premier League era, they have a second chance to reach European competitions if they defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25.
Ten Hag needs a second trophy in his two years in charge to dispel doubts about his future next season.
The Dutchman took the microphone on Wednesday after United’s last home game and thanked the fans for their support despite a difficult season.
“As you know, it hasn’t been an easy season, but one thing has remained constant and that is your support for the team,” Ten Hag said.
“This season is not over yet. First, we go to Brighton, where we want to get three points, and then we go to Wembley. I promise you that the players will give everything to win the cup and bring it to Old Trafford. We are sure you will be there to support us. Thank you, you are the best fans in the world,” added the coach.
