Crystal Palace player Marc Guéhi faces possible sanction by the English FA after a controversy involving a religious message. During matchday 13 of the Premier League, Guéhi wore the rainbow armband, part of a campaign in support of the LGBTQ+ community, but added the inscription “I love Jesus”. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) prohibits religious expressions on uniforms, putting the player in a delicate situation.
Sam Morsy, captain of Ipswich Town, refused to wear the rainbow armband during a game against Nottingham Forest, citing religious reasons as he is a practicing Muslim. His decision attracted criticism, but the club defended the player, highlighting other actions to promote diversity and inclusion.
The Premier League’s campaign to combat LGBTQ+ discrimination has taken place annually between matchdays 13 and 14 since 2013, promoting fairness and acceptance. Although wearing the rainbow armband is encouraged, it is not compulsory, leaving the decision to the team captains. Curiously, Guéhi and Morsy will face each other this Tuesday in a duel marked by these controversies.
