Harry Kane has said that German fans are watching the England team with a little more affection since his move to Bayern Munich, although the Three Lions captain does not expect the hosts to be cheering on Gareth Southgate’s team at Euro-2024.
Kane, who moved to Bayern from Tottenham in a €120m transfer last year, scored 44 goals in 45 games in all competitions for the German side, but the club failed to win the Bundesliga for the first time since 2013.
Despite the disappointment, Kane admitted he was enjoying his time in Germany and was looking forward to returning for Euro-2024.
“Tommy (Thomas Muller) left me a little note because they were only here a fortnight ago” Kane told reporters ahead of Sunday’s Group C match against Serbia.
Kane added that being back in Germany was a kind of “home away from home”.
England and Germany have a fierce footballing rivalry, which has already manifested itself at the World Cup and the Euros.
England beat West Germany 4-2 in the final of the 1966 World Cup and won 2-0 in the last 16 of Euro 2020. The Germans came out on top in the penalty shoot-out in the 1990 World Cup semi-final in Italy, where England’s Paul Gascoigne broke down in tears after receiving a yellow card that denied him a place in the final.
“The welcome I’ve received since I’ve been at Bayern has been incredible and, as soon as I arrived at the hotel, some of the staff came to say hello”, said Kane.
