Joshua Kimmich does not see his move to the right-back position for Bayern and the German national team “as a demotion.”
“It’s not that I now have a different role in the team,” Kimmich told Süddeutsche. “I am still the same person, the same character, and the same teammate,” he added.
The 29-year-old player emphasized once again that he “enjoys playing both in midfield and in the full-back position.”
“The change does not affect my mentality, passion, and approach. In fact, anyone who knows me a bit is aware of that,” he assured.
“A different profile of demands”
Kimmich highlighted that playing at right-back is “an entirely exciting position, you can play from the outside, sometimes also from the middle, you can create scoring opportunities. However, you also often have to deal with the opponent’s best players.”
Kimmich experienced this recently against players like Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior, for example.
The German believes he has already regained his routine in his new position.
“I have been playing in this position since March, and I have regained my routine. It is a completely different position from midfield, with a different profile of demands, both physical and mental,” he explained.
