Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Kylian Mbappé are due to appear before the Ligue de football professionnel’s (LFP) joint appeals committee at 3pm on Tuesday as part of the club’s appeal against Mbappé’s €55 million claim for unpaid wages and other bonuses. The commission is made up of members of UNFP (the players‘ union) and Foot Unis (the clubs’ union), as well as an independent chairman and a judge. It may confirm or overturn the decision of the LFP’s legal committee, which ordered PSG to pay the sums claimed after Mbappé left for Real Madrid in the summer of 2024.
The LFP’s legal committee had proposed mediation in September, but this was rejected by Mbappé. The LFP therefore ordered PSG to pay the €55 million within a week, prompting the club to appeal. If the decision is overturned, the joint commission could choose to restart proceedings or refer the case back to the legal committee, which would mean a return to square one.
The Joint Committee’s decision, although it may be taken immediately after the parties have been heard, generally takes a few days to be finalised. After this deliberation, other appeals are still possible, such as to the French Football Federation (FFF), the administrative courts or the National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).
The dispute between PSG and Mbappé began following an agreement reached in August 2023, in which Mbappé undertook to forgo €55 million in bonuses if he left PSG without renewal, moving for free, as he has done. The player claims the deal is invalid, calling it a ‘secret agreement’. Mbappé is demanding payment of the final third of the signing bonus, wages for the last three months of his contract and an ethics bonus, totalling €55 million.
