Lisandro Martinez is likely to play his first game for Manchester United since March on Wednesday, while Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Willy Kambwala will be assessed for their fitness to return from injury, stated Erik ten Hag.
Raphael Varane, who announced his departure at the end of the season on Tuesday, won’t be available for the midweek Premier League match against Newcastle United but could return on Sunday, added the coach.
Ten Hag anticipates having the French defender ready for the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.
“I think he’ll come back” said Ten Hag to journalists regarding Martinez, who has only played 11 matches this season due to various injuries. “He has had a few sessions, and if everything goes well in training, he’ll be involved.”
“We’re planning for (Varane to play) in the final few games. Not tomorrow (Wednesday), but hopefully on Sunday and then, of course, in the last game (FA Cup final)” he added.
Manchester United, currently eighth with 54 points, is three points behind sixth-placed Newcastle with two games left and needs to close that gap to qualify for the Europa League.
“It’s a very important game” acknowledged the Dutchman. “Getting the win for qualification is crucial.”
Newcastle has won their last three games against Manchester United, scoring six goals and conceding none.
“We have to do everything to get the win, and we have to fight hard for it” said Ten Hag.
