Manchester City announced tragic news on Monday (16): a fan died as a result of a medical accident during Sunday’s derby against Manchester United, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
In a statement published on its official website, the club expressed its deep sadness at the loss:
“Manchester City is aware of the tragic news of the death of one of our fans following a medical incident during yesterday’s match”.
The statement also contains a message of solidarity:
“The thoughts of the whole club are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time”.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the incident occurred at around 4.10pm, around 20 minutes before kick-off, near one of the entrances to the Etihad Stadium.
The fan suddenly collapsed and resuscitation maneuvers were quickly initiated at the scene.
He was quickly taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately did not survive, and his death was confirmed shortly afterwards.
