Approximately 5,000 police officers will be deployed to the Greek capital, Athens, on Wednesday for the Conference League final between Olympiakos and Fiorentina, authorities announced on Tuesday.

The police stated that public gatherings will be banned in the metropolitan area of Athens, and schools will be closed near the AEK Arena, which is hosting the match. Additionally, the nearest train line will be closed to the general public.

The heightened security comes as Greece attempts to crack down on hooliganism following a series of violent incidents.

Over the weekend, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos fans clashed in Berlin during the final of the EuroLeague basketball competition for European clubs.

In August, a 29-year-old fan was fatally stabbed outside the AEK Arena during clashes between AEK Athens supporters and those of Dinamo Zagreb.

Four months later, a 31-year-old police officer was fatally injured by a flare during a confrontation with Olympiakos hooligans at a volleyball derby in Athens. Subsequently, the police made more than 60 arrests.

A new series of security measures was implemented both inside and outside stadiums, and games were played without fans for several weeks until February.
