Rúben Amorim was officially appointed as Manchester United’s sixth manager since the 2012/13 season, the year of the last Premier League title under the command of the legendary Alex Ferguson. After a successful period with Sporting, where he recently won his second title in four years, Amorim left the Alvalade club to lead United from November 11, succeeding Dutchman Erik ten Hag. Manchester United paid 12.7 million euros for his signing, including a 10 million release clause.
At 39 years old, Amorim seeks to return United to the top, supported by Portuguese figures such as Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes. The club, currently 14th in the Premier League with 11 points, is facing one of its worst campaigns since the glory days under Ferguson, who won 38 of United’s historic 70 titles. Since his retirement, the club has won trophies with difficulty, including under the command of José Mourinho, the most successful since then.
United’s new era is now managed by Ineos shareholder Jim Ratcliffe, who has brought in significant investment, including €214.5 million in the last transfer window. Amorim will introduce a 3-4-3 tactical scheme, being the first coach appointed by the new administration. The squad mixes experience and youth, highlighting names like Onana, Rashford, Garnacho and Hojlund. Amorim arrives at a time when United are looking for stability and a return to Ferguson’s winning mentality.
