Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United’s legendary manager, will step down as the club’s ambassador at the end of the season. The 83-year-old, who will celebrate his birthday in December, has held the ambassadorial role since his retirement in 2013 after leading United to their last Premier League title. His departure, described as amicable, comes amidst significant changes at the club.
Manchester United has recently undergone major restructuring after British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe purchased a 27.7% stake in February 2024. Ratcliffe’s $1.3 billion investment led to cost-cutting initiatives, including 250 staff redundancies. The club also reported losses of $148 million.
Ferguson, who joined Manchester United in 1986, is widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers in history. Under his leadership, the club secured 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League trophies, and the historic treble in 1999.
Despite stepping down from his ambassadorial role, Ferguson remains a non-executive member of the board, and his presence at Old Trafford will continue to be welcomed.
