South African president labels party’s burning flag campaign Ad as treason

A campaign ad by South Africa’s opposition party depicting the nation’s flag in flames has ignited tensions weeks before crucial national elections, deemed the most significant since the end of apartheid three decades ago.

The Democratic Alliance claims the video symbolizes potential outcomes if the ruling African National Congress (ANC) forms a coalition to retain power after the May 29 election.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC leader, denounced the ad as “despicable” and “treasonous.”

State broadcaster SABC opted not to air the video, citing alleged public outcry and concerns about escalating unrest.

Critics argue the ad accurately reflects the profound challenges facing Africa’s most developed economy.
