Southgate in his post-match comments:
“It’s clear we haven’t lived up to our expectations. We haven’t played well enough so far and we need to put more pressure on the opposition than we did in the first two games.
So far, we haven’t played as fluidly as we would have liked. We’ve struggled to control the game, which has made for a very anxiety-provoking spectacle. We have to be better if we want to go far in this European Championship.
We need to analyse these two matches in depth and find solutions to the problems we’re encountering. That’s what we’re going to do over the next few days, because we want the standard to be higher.”
Harry Kane followed suit and said:
“We can play better with and without the ball. I think the sign that we’re up against a good team is that they can get results without being at their best, but we haven’t qualified yet and that’s goal number 1.
I’m sure there will be a lot of noise and disappointment in England, but it’s time to calm down. We need to think, regroup and, little by little, we’ll get to where we want to be.
There are no easy games in the final stages of major football competitions and I think we’ve seen that.“
