German authorities arrested 59 Paris Saint-Germain supporters before the Champions League match against VfB Stuttgart to prevent potential clashes with local fans. The Stuttgart police announced this information on Wednesday, just hours before the decisive match.
Increased Security for a Crucial Match
VfB Stuttgart hosts PSG on the final day of the Champions League group stage, with both teams still in the hunt for a playoff spot that could lead to the Round of 16.
The police stated that they had received information about possible clashes between fans, leading to the arrest of the PSG supporters on Tuesday night. They will remain in custody until Thursday to avoid any disturbances before and after the match.
Joint Operation Between Paris and Stuttgart Police
“Thanks to an in-depth investigation and close collaboration with the Paris police, the French supporters were located at Stuttgart’s central train station and in several hotels around the city,” said the German authorities’ statement.
During searches, equipment used for concealing identities, typically used in case of riots, was found. After consulting a judge, it was decided to keep the PSG supporters in detention until Thursday morning to minimize the risk of violence.
Restrictions Also Imposed on Stuttgart Supporters
The measures are not limited to PSG fans: 47 high-risk VfB Stuttgart supporters have been banned from entering the city center to prevent any incidents.
The match between Stuttgart and PSG is therefore taking place under high tension, both on and off the field, with enhanced security measures before, during, and after the match.
