The French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, has announced that two of the leaders of the homophobic chants that took place at the Parc des Princes during the match between PSG and Strasbourg last Saturday have been identified.
In an interview with France Inter, Retailleau said that he supports the interruption of matches whenever such demonstrations take place, stressing that those responsible will be severely punished. “It has become unbearable. We can no longer tolerate these chants”, he emphasized.
During the match, PSG fans, mainly from the Auteuil claque, chanted homophobic slurs against Marseille for around 10 minutes, ahead of the derby that will take place at the Velodrome on October 27.
In addition, Retailleau pointed out that there were violent incidents the following Sunday in Montpellier involving Marseille fans, resulting in six officers being slightly injured. The minister called the violence unjustifiable.
A meeting on the case will be held at 14:00, attended by the Minister for Sport, Gil Avérous, and the Secretary of State, Othman Nasrou, to discuss measures against discrimination in soccer.
