The Champions League is getting a major overhaul with more teams, more games, and increased prize money. UEFA has introduced a new format, replacing the traditional group stage with a single-standings league phase. The changes include:
- Expanded Teams and Games: The competition grows to 36 teams, each playing eight games against different opponents. This guarantees more high-profile matchups and games scheduled in January for the first time.
- Increased Prize Money: Prize money will rise by at least 25%, with a minimum of €2.5 billion available.
- Format Changes: The top eight teams in the standings will go directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will enter a knockout playoff round. The traditional group stage format is replaced, with a more extensive schedule aimed at boosting excitement and revenue.
The changes respond to demands from top clubs for more prestige games and revenue, while also seeking to fend off the threat of breakaway leagues like the failed Super League. However, concerns exist about player fatigue and the widening wealth gap in European soccer.
