Raphaël Varane has decided to call time on his career. The former France international, who signed for newly-promoted Italian Serie A side Como at the start of the season, made the decision after suffering a serious knee injury.
“The rumour is real. They say all good things must come to an end”, Varane wrote on his social networks. “Throughout my career, I’ve taken on countless challenges, many of which seemed impossible. I’ve experienced incredible emotions, special moments and created memories that will stay with me forever. It is with great pride and a sense of accomplishment that I announce my retirement from the game we love so much”, he added.
“I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of. Apart from the trophies, I’m proud to have stayed true to my principles, always trying to leave every place better than I found it. I hope I’ve made everyone proud,” continued the Frenchman.
Winner of the 2018 World Cup and runner-up at the 2022 World Cup, Varane has played 93 times for Les Bleus and enjoyed a fine career with Real Madrid from 2011 to 2021, before joining Manchester United.
Speaking about the future, Varane revealed: “Now a new life begins off the pitch. I’ll be staying in Como, but without soccer boots. I can’t wait to say more soon”.
