Egyptian side Zamalek celebrated late into Sunday night after overcoming Morocco’s RS Berkane to win the CAF Confederation Cup, the continent’s second most important club competition.
The Cairo-based club won the trophy on aggregate. Heading into the return fixture at the Cairo International Stadium, they trailed 2-1 from the first leg in Morocco. Striker Ahmed Hamdi scored on 23 minutes to level the tie, securing the title for Zamalek on away goals.
This is Zamalek’s second Confederation Cup title; their first came in the 2018/2019 season, also at Berkane’s expense, who they defeated in a penalty shootout. Berkane has won the trophy twice.
As Berkane pressed for an equalizer, they suffered a blow when defender Hamza el Moussaoui received a straight red card for a late-game foul. Despite being down a man, Berkane launched wave after wave of attacks but couldn’t break through Zamalek’s solid defense.
